Default lsvtec question, no vtec in 4th and 5th

is this due to the fact i have a non vtec oil pump on my car?
it will engauge in 1, 2 and 3rd, sometimes at the end of third gear around 7,
i have an LS tranny, and the gears are longer,

Maybe sence the gears are longer and it takes longer in 4th and 5th gear to get to 7 grand the oil pressure is not where it needs to be...
any suggestions?

vtec only works in 3rd gear

i know that doesnt help, but why would it engage only in 3 gears???

if you max out 3rd and in vtec you're already in the 100mph range what are you doing trying to pull vtec in 4th and 5th gear are you trying to go 200 mph hahahaha.

what rpm does your vtec crossover at?..if your in 3rd and your nearing max...once you shift into 4th your most likely going to be in vtec range still and same in 5th, the tone wont change since your already in vtec. this applies if you have a chipped ecu and shorter gear ratio...but i assume this is happening though with your car.

do you have a knock sensor hooked up? it sounds like my old setup when my knock sensor came unhooked. that would cause you to throw a check engine light in 3rd

That is the knock sensor. It shouldn't go on when vtec engages, though. If it is bad, it will come within a few minutes of the car running normally.

It doesn't have anything to do with oil, but if it is unplugged/broken, vtec will not engage. It should be throwing a CEL code 23 if it were bad/unplugged.

I am hesitant to say it is the oil pump. Have you checked the code (if you can even check it)? Have you pulled the vtec solenoid apart and checked for any problems there?

your lacking oil pressure at top end. the non vtec oil pump is not sufficient oil pressure to activate the solenoid. upgrade to a gsr or a type r oil pump. it happened to a friend of mine that put a gsr head on a ls block. good luck.....

issues or not i would have done it the right way the first time.

p.s. we now know its oil pressure and some say it probaly isnt the pump... well then what the expletive controls oil pressure? I think for damn sure its the shitty ls pump
