and actually, clifford is comming out with a new G5 avantguard 2 way alarm, the 5.5x. it seems pretty cool im thinkin about getting it just cause i can't get a hook up with compustar alarms

[edit]
found some more info on it on cnet
http://netscape.com.com/4520-1....html

and straight from DEI's press release:
This is simply the most advanced keychain device ever made! Scroll the wheel and see a vast selection of icons (drawn on the LCD screen via Dot Matrix.) Select the icon, enlarge it and press the button to send a command or sensor adjustment to the vehicle via Spread Spectrum, with ultra-extreme range of up to a full mile!

That’s just the remote. The system CPU itself is the most advanced Clifford system Directed has ever made, with 3-point immobilization and three separate sensors: digital tilt sensor, OmniSensor and remotely adjustable proximity sensor, with BlackJax anti carjacking, Smart Self-Powered Siren, 3 auxiliary outputs and built-in relays.

The AvantGuard 5.5X is simply the state-of-the-art 2-Way vehicle security and convenience system in the world.

Dei makes the best security out there bar none, but the problem is is that the 2 way responder sucks *** as far as range goes!! Just my 2 cents

wiring is more convienant with directed, programming is a breeze, very user friendly
compustar is a pain to program, bypasses are hit or miss, availability is an issue

your decision of what to install

i talk from experience and have installed everything into everything and would recommend DEI over them all
if you want a 2 way unit, stay away from the original white/grey unit (2003-4) i think

layer your security. DEI products are pretty good. might want the GPS locator as well. Or think about Lo-jack/Boomerang as well.

Now this is just sooo ******* sad. You ask for info, then are gonna buy it from
some website? You really dont have a clue..do you. You should always
buy a product like this from an authorized dealer (ie:storefront) that
way you get the best service and support. Buying from some website is like
walking across a busy intersection blindfolded. Sure you might make it across
...but odss are youre gonna get pinched!!

So many of you out there just look for the cheapest way to get an alarm, and then cry the blues, then when the unit gos down, find out you have to pull the unit and send it in, [without any alarm for a while] and then find out that any warranty you have on it is a pain to get. 94 PS OH WELL

Yeah, you really shouldn't get something as vital as an alarm from a website.

By the way, DEI is coming out with a Newer 2 way system (You had listed the 790xv even though that one is way outa date....)

It will allow for adjustment of the shock sensor via the remote control!!! a very welcomed option if you ask me

i'm getting the compustar fm900 fri. I've shopped around and it came down to the SS, FM900 or the Viper 791xv. I'll tell you why i decided on the FM900 and maybe it will help you.

1. Viper is nice, but I wanted a remote start. Technically it's illegal to install Viper remote start on a manual without the clutch bypass which only compustar makes I believe. I found a place that does it, but since the alarm is lifetime warranty, I don't want to run into problems later on, esp since i'm moving back to florida in august. I don't want to go to another viper dealer and they kick me out the door because most dealers won't install remote start vipers on manuals.

2. The Viper range is only 1/4 mile. Though that might be plenty for you, I park 1/2 mile at least from my office back at the University of Florida. And if I have to go to the library then that's even further. So it came down to the SS and the FM900, both alarm with remote starts.

3. The SS is older, came out in 2002. Although Spread Spectrum is hot and the range is 1.25 miles, it burns through battery on the pager like crazy. I know a friend of mine replaces his once or twice a month. The FM900 is cheaper, newer and won the 2004 Innovations award. It's range is over 1/2 mile, and the pager is better looking imo. It shares the 900MHz frequency used by the SS but the technology has been retooled to save lots of battery life and I believe the signal is actually clearer.

So I'm going with the SS. And Compustar is better with their warrantee through their authorized dealers than DEI (owner of Viper) is I believe, because anyone can install Vipers. Your alarm is only as good as your installer, so I would definitely call around. The price for the FM900 is 500, and with tax is 535. I've called around it's pretty much all the same since compustar has fixed dealer prices. Make sure you confirm the lifetime warranty. And also have them disconnect the headlights when the panic on your alarm goes off, and hook it up to the parking or highbeams if you are planning on getting HIDs, because flashing aftermarket HIDs decreases the lifetime signficiantly.
