Default Smaller Size For Winter

Hi So I just bought a 2015 Honda Accord Touring that came with 235/45R/18 summer tires installed and a set of 215/55R17 winter tires + rims. I have an extra set of OEM Honda mags from my old car (which took 225/50R17) that I'd like to use for winter instead - was planning on buying new tires for them and selling/giving away the winter set that came with the car.

The recommended tires for the car are the 235/45R/18 and I live in Canada where we have pretty heavy winters, so I'm assuming that's why the previous owner went down to 17 for winter.

So my questions are:

Which would be the better option between 225/50R17 and 215/55R17 (in general)?

Can I get away with putting the 215s on the 225 mags? (probably won't do this, just want to know if it's possible)

Should I just buy new 18 inch rims and tires?

I know it's super early but I just wanna get rid of all the extra tires in my garage.

Thanks!

17" wheels give more tire sidewall for the same diameter to give better impact resistance.

215 to 225 isn't much of a difference at all. They will both fit on the same width of wheel.

Generally a dedicated snow tire is narrower than summer tires. Both 215 and 225 are a good choice. The selling point would be availability in the flavor of your choosing.
