Default Root and size problem

I’m in my dual enrollment welding school and I have a quick question about 2 things.

welding 7018 3/32 and 1/8 running 85-90 and 115-120 amps

I used 1/8th on a filler weld flat but I notice when I lay my root the slag is hard to get off more than my 2nd passes+. I also notice this on my vertical 3/32, I do everything right holding it on sides and angle yada yada but it doesn’t bacon itself. What’s wrong?

and on my verticals my welds come out wide, their fat. I fixed the pointing in the middle but I can’t find out how to make them skinnier and I usually use a zigzag pattern. Thanks.

Regarding the root pass, how much of the mill scale are you grinding off?

What thickness plate are you welding?

Why aren't you using a 6010 for the root?

Second question, tighten up the zigzag. You just need to touch the toes. If you have a 'dig' setting, play with that a bit.

I grind all mill scale off clean and shinier and smoother than my brain

we run at the school bout any scrap plates we have which are usually 1/4 inch and more

our teacher doesn’t want us to use the 60s yet because the 70s are beginner friendly etc

I’ve gotten a bit better I’m kinda natural at welding sometimes so like a week after I was able to lay some cashmoney
