pipe beveling
What is everyone useing to bevel the edges of pipe just a grinder ? or have some of you make a jig to get a perfect bevel every time. Any pics or vids would be great. Even if it's just a grinder your useing .
A handheld flap wheel won't make it any more "perfect" (accurate) than a handheld grinding wheel, and will be a lot slower unless your pipe is tiny or has thin walls.
"Perfect" pipe beveling comes from a cutter rotating around the pipe, whether it's a lathe (assuming the pipe isn't ovaled), a pipe beveler with torch/plasma head on it, or whatever.
Whether you NEED "perfection" depends on exactly what you're doing - most home shop people get by with a grinder.

A flap wheel is FAR more accurate than a grinding wheel IMO. I do sch XX with it all the time. Its way easier on your hands too (vibrations). Im not gonna make a vid sorry. Put it in a vice eyeball the angle of the grinder and work around it.
i used a flap wheel on a cheap angle grinder. i mount the angle grinder to the bench though its alot easier moving the peice than the grinder.

It's the same handheld machine whether you've got a flap disc or grinding wheel on it, so neither wheel is going to be more "accurate" than the other - your hand-eye coordination determines the accuracy.
The only thing I can think of is that by "accuracy" you actually mean "surface finish." Flap discs definitely leave a more polished surface - after all, making a mirror-smooth surface is the ONLY thing they can do that a quality grinding wheel can't do better (faster and cheaper).
If I were you I'd just clamp the pipe in the vise already and grind your bevels.
I know of a couple people who tried to make handheld grinders into stationary grinders and wished they didn't when the grinders came out of their jerry-rigged mounts. If you want a stationary grinder, I'd suggest you buy a cheap bench grinder off Craigslist.

why is it so ridiculous ? I'm trying to find out from experienced fabricators what they use to make bevels and get perfect fit ups ? It was a simple question and I got a lot of good answers all i was wondering was weather people do it with there bare hands and a grinder, or if they use a belt sander ? or if anyone has ever mad a jig. Thank you to everyone who has helped and given good information and if anyone has anything else useful to add please do if not than dont if all your gonna do is make stupid comments than dont even bother posting

It's as if no one knows how to think for themselves or do their own research. There are so many ways to bevel a pipe. A simple search on google or yahoo yields great results if you take more than a minute to use it.
I'm all for helping people (I do attempt to give valid advice on here). At least when it seems like they have made an honest attempt to help themselves.
If someone can't make an honest attempt to help themselves, why should other have to spoon feed them the answer?
I know how to bevel a pipe I just didnt know if over the years people have found a better or more precise meathod than just a grinder. I dont consider my self or this thread someone whos spoon fed I do a lot of reading and I search on google all the time I even have videos saved on my computer of people beveling pipes and plates before i even wrote this thread. Again I just didn't know if anyone else came up with a different way. All Im saying is i see it on these fourms all the time it takes the same amount of time to blast someone as it would to respond with useful information. And I agree there are a lot of people who always ask stupid questions that have been coverd many time alredy like what do i need to turbo my car, or is tuning or a wideband necessary ect. It's annoying and the answer is easly found, I just dont see the point of blasting that person or trying to make them feel stupid when it takes the same amount of time to eaiter respond with good information or send them a link that redirects them to a similar topic or just dont respond. Is all im getting at
Ex of pipe beveled by hand with flap wheel, lathe and milled pieces.

@joein: i have nice milwaukee grinders and a caninet full of every walter flapwheel, frinding wheel and zip disk you can think of. It is my opinion that the flap wheel is superior.
