Building a work table(FIRST TIME)
Whats up HT, well I'm learning from a friend at work how to weld little by little and he suggested I build/weld a work table. Seeing this is my first time trying it on my own, I figured maybe someone can give me suggestions or pointers on putting one together. I also have a quetion, is there a specific type of metal to be used to make a work table? If anyone can give me suggestions i would really appraciate it.
Just use mild steel, cheapest you can find for plates. How big are you looking for it to be? Lets just say 4'x8' with a 3/8" thk steel top for simplicity sakes. Set it at whatever height that suits you best, so you can comfortably reach over 3/4 of the table(Around 3.5' to 4' high). For the legs you can just use pipe or angle iron. 3" sch40 pipe should be more than enough to hold everything up. You could use 3/8"thk flatbar for support struts and cross braces.
I could probably draw something up in my spare time, I'm pretty good at making blueprints.

well before anyone gets too far ahead, whats your goal for this table? i.e workbench against a wall, or a dedicated welding table? How much room do you have to work with? personally I like to over engineer things, but steel welding tables get HEAVY fast and if you dont plan on using a 4x8 and dont have a need for it, then its kinda hard to justify it.
I made mine extra beefy so i could put a chopper up on it, or anything else really heavy and not have it flex or move at all. I used a 4X6 3/8" AR grade steel plate on top, then built a 2"x .1875" square tube "skeleton" that is welded to the underside of the top plate. The legs i built out of 3"X.1875" square tube. I have about $800 into the whole thing but it serves many purposes and IMO is worth the money. We had to move it with a forklift, then once it was set i shimmed it so it is perfectly level all the way around.
Well this thing is going into my personal garage at a new home I'm moving into. I don't think I will need anything bigger than 4x6, I would most likely use it when working on some motors and other automotive purposes. I don't need to have a top of the line table just something to do some work on(tired of using the floor), I figured it would be the best time to try what I've been learning. Well I appreciate all the help. Lugzilla you have a pm. I will look into it a bit more.
