Check if your college offers any welding classes. The amount of materials, consumables, gas, electricity, you'll use in the class, will far outweigh the amount of money you'll spend for the class. Some colleges have instructors who are also AWS certified inspectors (as well as their facility), so you'd be able to certify there.

Why do you need a pipe/plate welding certificate, If you're going to school for business? Just curious.

we're practicing for the D1.1 cert. and we burn through 1" thick plate all day everyday, about $1000 worth a night split bewteen the 10 guys in the class.

use the hell out of the horizontal band saw, places were you can FCAW or smaw, other side there are GTAW ( even more expensive, truckloads of argon weekly w/ daily aluminum sheets)

the class is 4 units @ $20 a unit.

i spend more on rod a week than the class
