Default for those with a 4.9 FD...

the power: 210whp (pending new tune) b series

the trans: USDM GSR trans, Mfactory 3.07 1st and 4.928 FD

the dilemma: when i go to the track i have at least a 2 hour drive/other little longer trips i take. mfactory gear calculator shows that this gearing will move a normal highway cruising speed of 75 mph in 5th gear from 3700 rpm to about 4100 rpm. i finish a 1/4 mile in mid 4th and the new setup shouldnt have me needing a shift to 5th.

how many of you have just learned to deal with the rev's and how many of you have thrown in an LS 5th while you were in there to bring cruising back down to about 3800 rpm?

this is the last decision i need to make and im having a tough time. id like to put the money into some other stuff, but then again another 120 bucks isnt that bad to have a not so annoying cruising rpm...

Cruising RPM isn't a big deal. I'm at 4,950 RPM at 80mph with an SMSP race exhaust (aka loud as anything). Fuel economy is better than any other gearing setup I've run (including the Y7 HB trans with 3.7 FD).

for me I've also learned to live with the higher cruising rev's. I'm also near 5k @ 80 mph but i don't really cruise that fast. I'm usually around 70 and the rpm's are around 4300 or so, but I'm running a twin loop which isn't as loud as Aquafina's exhaust

haha you know ive done my research so i know the fuel isnt an issue...its more the big cam worrying me at high rpms for long periods and loud *** exhaust hurting my sanity lol.

I used to always go on road trips with my B16 EG with MF 4.9FD...cruising over 5k most of the time and still got 42 mpg

silence the exhaust if it bugs you, or turn up the volume. It's nice cruising at high revs- passing gear

haha.

yeah like i said i know about the mpg. but it will be nice to not have to drop out of 5th to pass... so maybe i will just leave out the 5th gear for now it seems.

maybe ill have to use the money for a non fart can exhaust.

I still haven't got mine going yet, lol. With the gsr gears it wont be too bad. If it was a b16 tranny like mine I would say definitely change 5th with at least a gsr like I did.

ps: I am getting close to start up now. Just a few odds and ends left.

I'm running a Gx 4.9fd in my J-spec Itr. 102kph (60mph) @ 4000rpm on oem 16's and going 80mph its @ 5000rpm flat. Little bit of vibration due to the Hasport mounts but I'm still running the Oem exhaust system (Comptech header). good gas mileage on the highway but not the city.
