I've been doing some digging around and found out that part number 23431-pns-000 which is the second gear by itself is no longer available. I have found a third party site that supposedly has this particular part number in stock, but i've read on this forum that the reason the part number is no longer available by itself is due to the fact that people were replacing the gear by itself which caused more problems than the original. Now, I have the transmission open and it seems that the second gear itself has the teeth worn down. no damage to the synchronizer, although i was going to change the synchro to a carbon lined gear speed synchro along with the second gear. would any professional here advise towards or against that fix? should i just save up for the entire second gearset instead?

 

What do the teeth on the slider look like ??? If they look like the teeth on 2nd gear, then I suggest you purchase the whole 1-2 slider set from Honda. If it appears to be healthy, then I see no reason why you cannot replace 2nd gear only and the synchro brass and be just fine.

If the slider looks healthy, there is no reason why one cannot replace the 2nd gear itself along with the synchro ring... if you can find them available from some source besides Honda since you cannot buy the gear alone from them.

 

where would i be able to find the second gear by itself? can anybody direct me to a third party site? i'm really not trying to buy the entire set for no reason seeing as how i already invested in a gearspeed synchro

 

Synchrotech or Gearspeed may sell you the gear. I know often Synchrotech has parts available that aren't on their website that they will sell you if you contact them.

 

i actually went ahead and bought the second gear set from gearspeed along with their carbon synchro. the second gear set is on back order however so it'll be two weeks before i get it in.

These mating gears may be a required set change; if only one gear is replaced, abnormal wear and/or noise may occur.

 

just got the piece in last week and they looked pretty as hell. synchro was looking like a boss too. i finally got the gears pressed together on the shaft and the transmission back together and mounted. tomorrow i will be finishing up some miscellaneous work on the car and i'll take her out for a test drive to let you all know how everything is with the second gear. so far i would definitely recommend gearspead wholesale to anybody who is looking to rebuild their transmission or are looking for transmission parts. very helpful and informative always answer to my calls and give me detailed information. when the order was on backstock they called ME and informed me to see if i wanted a refund.

 

Generally speaking that's true, however since the mainshaft half of second gear is part of the mainshaft it's not usually done due to the extreme cost.

 

i just got the car up and running on friday and it ran very well. i just adjusted my clutch pedal at work today and the drive home was amazing. i have a review posted on both my ebay clutch and the second gear set on another section. thanks to all of you for your information and help

 

As long as there is no abnormal wear, it is fine to replace only one half of a gear, as long as it is with a new gear.
