Default JDM Automatic Transmissions

What are peoples experiences with JDM trannies whether manual or automatic?

I've got a ton of Civic annd Integra experience, but no experience with Accords and Preludes.

My sister and her family have a 1999 Accord EX with F23A motor and auto trans. The car has over 200K on it and the tranny is starting to go.

They would like to keep the car to pass on to thier teenage daughter, my niece, but not have to pay well over $2K to get the tranny rebuilt.

So the question has to do with used trannies. Most salvage yards are asking well over $800 for USDM trannies with high mileage. However, I am finding used JDM trannies with the classic description of "35,000" miles, going for $600.00.

Most of us know that JDM motors are usually in poor condition by the time they get here to the US, mostly because the Japanese drivers beat the car up and don't maintain them knowing the car would have to be dismantled at a certain point.

So again, what are peoples experiences with JDM trannies whether manual or automatic?

autos should be cheap ($100-500)...
just get one from a junkyard/Craigs list or something like that...
most junk yards give a 30 day warranty...

just my $0.02

Let me rephrase my question..........

Would a "low mileage" JDM auto tranny be a better buy compared to a "high mileage" USDM auto tranny? Do JDM auto trannies typically get maintained in the proper manner with fluid changes, etc.? Or do the JDM drivers not care since the car has to eventually get dismantled anyway?

I wouldn't be so concerned about the condition of the transmission so much as if it will actually work. JDM automatic transmissions are usually different from their USDM counterparts. As an example '96 - '00 JDM civic automatic transmissions use a kickdown cable, while the USDM versions are all controlled electronically.
