Intermediate shaft play, replace bearing?
So I swapped a b series engine in my ej8 and and installed new "auto parts store" axles with it before I knew what a nightmare they could be. Moral of the story is that I have the same problem of vibration under power (2500-5000) that a lot of people have from using these axles. Today I was removing them when I notice a little play in the bearing on the intermediate shaft.
My question is there supposed to be any play in the intermediate shaft, and could it be adding to my vibration?
Here's a link to a video hopefully you can see it.

I wasn't sure if I should put it back in or wait the couple days for the parts to come in to honda and change the bearing....

I've got two known good B16s in my garage with the intermediate shaft still attached, and they've both got about the same amount of play.
Your problem could be poor axle geometry, but it could also be improper wheel balance or alignment.
How many motor mounts are you using, and what brand are they?
Personally, I've never had a vibration problem with autozone axles. I've used them for over 10 years in my EF.

I'm using all my stock mounts including passenger and driver torque mounts. All look good (no rips or dry rot)
They are new autozone axles, not reman, which are supposed to be manufactured by cardone... so I assumed they would be ok...

I installed the engine with 100% stock suspension. In the last week I've added new coils, control arms, bushings, and ball joints. I get the same vibration with both setups.

EDIT: I see that you said you had two SETS of wheels, and one freshly balanced. Assuming you're still getting vibration with the balanced wheel set installed, disregard this post.

I would take the axle(s) back and get them replaced under warranty. I too use autozone axles (I use the reman'ed ones) and some last several months, some vibrate fresh out of the box. But for $50 with lifetime warranty, you cant go wrong!
That's exactly what I did. I guess I'm gonna keep swapping them out till I get a good set... lol
Just to update. I warrantied my axles out for some new ones. Installed and now 95% of the vibration is gone.
2 problems down 1 to go!

Vibration under power means it's an axle problem (especially from the inboard joint, and or length binding issues). Wheels, tires, and brake rotors will shimmy under different conditions.
Good thread. Came in here to add that I have 2 different intermediate shafts in my garage, they both have a bit of play in them. I think it's normal with age, but doesn't necessarily indicate a bad bearing.
