how do i measure to shim a diff
I put together a trans with some parts I had from old transmissions I had and I was told I have to measure and shim the diff to keep it from walking. I cannot find a write up on this and would like to do this so I don't damage the trans. Thank you in advance for any info.
Slide a feeler gauge in between the diff bearing and shim. You want a max of .04" with ball bearings. Tapered bearings require a special tool to check the preload. It is all in the Helms manual and there are several how-to's that have been posted in here.
I just ordered a Chilton's manual today cause I keep having to refer to Google for simple **** like this. I don't have a shim in there yet, so would I just put a feeler gauge in between the diff bearing and case to see what shim I need?

Scroll to post #4 you can use this as a guideline on how to check, The measure measurements should come from the service manual for the correct type of trans.
