Help case will not close
Hello, My S4C gearbox case WILL NOT close!
All i have in is the DIFF and Counter and Main Shaft.
I even removed the 'tab' washer.
For some Reason the main and counter shaft bearings will not go in the top housing.
HELP PLEASE

It took me a little while to realize that the reason we had a 1\4" or 1\2" gap was cause we had it sitting on its face and it was pushing the mainshaft up not allowing the two parts of the case to close up.
I was having the same problem with my tranny a couple days ago. I've rebuilt 5 already and never had a problem til that one. I figured out that mine was hitting on the input shaft top bearing. I put mine up on blocks and it went on then.
my first ever tranny rebuild, i took all the gears off the mainshaft to clean it up, when i put them back together i got the 5th/reverse synchro mixed up, yes they are 2 different sizes and i couldnt get my case to close either so check your shafts make sure there isnt any gaps on them at all, that will cause it to not close
still busting my ***** guys
attacked the tranny 3 hours one night
2 another
and just now almost 3 hours trying to get this bitch to close
i wish i had a camera to take pics
the guy who mentioned the 5/r syncro, i think its right, the bigger teeth up top/Reverse
the syncro sleeve, tapered side is down.
it seems as tho, the mainshaft bearing is not seating in the case.
in for tips

You won't get the help you need because you are leaving out information.
I still believe that you have GSR gears mixed up on your countershaft.
Why?
When we put in my ITR complete gearset with your synchros and bearings, the gearbox closed. At that time you had a GSR 4th on your mainshaft causing it not to close.
There is a possibility that your countershaft may have another GSR gear on it.

Shift the gears while trying to get the case on? Besides all the obvious things that you might have done wrong we can suggest, it sounds like just a little alignment love might get it done. Who knows....
Re counted the countershaft and mainshaft gears.
everything adds up to b16a ratios/teeth
Also when we used your countershaft, and closed the case, we did not have the shift forks in.
Also realised i had the 5/r syncro hub the wrong side up, tapered side faces down.

Is the reverse gear right-side up?
And have you tried lightly tapping the casing down in case the bearing (be it diff bearing or ISB) does have some sort of burr making it stick? Will it close without the shifter mechanisms and shift forks yet? Do you still have them out, or are they back in when it won't close now?

The reverse gear is in correct, i think, the shaft part is downwards....
hit the case with a piece of wood
would close with mainshaft in alone
would close with countershaft in alone
but when both are together, they do not close

Yup. Reverse is in right. So this is all without the shift change assembly and shift forks in? Just the two shafts? That's almost impossible. If they sit together with all gears linked and lined up with each other, it will close very easily. Do you have locating pins in the transmission casing still? Make sure they are still round and not kinked. Remove them if necessary. What about the plastic oiling cover in the upper casing that sits on the ISB? Is that still in good condition and not smashed up, causing it to fold up on the bearing when sealing the case?
The plastic oil cage which the top isb sits on is in excellent condition
No it will not close with the Diff, Main and Countershafts installed alone, Minus reverse gear and shift forks
This is gay, i need to close this tranny, its down almost 5months now

The gears select fine when i slide the hub over the syncros
they spin free.
diff clerance is within spec, 0thou
The history is, Installed OBX LSD, was in gearbox previously working,
Then one day the Countershaft teeth broke along with ring gear teeth.
Both have been replaced with a used set.
Reshimmed the Diff, Changed syncros on both Shafts, and now this **** wont close.
While reassembly, i mixed up my 4th gear on the mainshaft, due to extra gsr gears i have.
Thought that might of been the problem and thus changed the 4th gear back to b16a gears.
Counted and double counted the teeth on both shafts.
They are b16a gears.

We've listed everything most of us can think of, dude. We need photos like someone said awhile ago. Simple as that. Have you let someone else like a trans shop or a friend who works on transmissions to have a go at it?
while hitting it with the handle of a hammer you should be able to feel what shaft/shift fork is not going up into its boss. i have always had luck with putting the tranny in 4th gear and just make sure all the shift forks and all that are going straight into their bosses in the case.
