What does it mean to run rich or lean?
There's rich which is too much fuel in the fuel to air ratio. Lean is where there is too little fuel in the fuel to air ratio. Then there's stoich, right ratio between fuel and air which results in complete combustion of fuel and air (I believe it's around 1 part of fuel for every 14 parts of air).

Oh, let me count the ways ... Lean: You may have a clog in the fuel line, a clog in an injector, bad O2, bad computer. If carbureted, you may have a clogged jet and a vacuum leak anywhere in the intake will create a lean condition (too much air, too little gas). Rich: too much line pressure, poor injector timing (on some cars), on carbureted cars - a float stuck in the open or down position, overly aggressive jetting. Some configurations will create a lean condition at some rpm's and go rich at others. But, aside from mechanical problems (i.e. vacuum leaks and clogs) mixture is an art in carbureted cars, a science in F/I cars.
From what I've learned in life, it's better to be RICH than lean, (or poor). But
running RICH in autos, (too much gas), is not good for your performance, plugs,
etc....Still, avoiding a LEAN situation is paramount. This is bad, just like being
poor
. That's an easy way of remembering "it"(the gas/air mixture equation).
BTW, not being an A'hole here, but a search would've/CAN get you alot more

rich will leave heavy carbon deposits, but generally doesn't hurt your motor as much as running lean where the heat will take a toll on your motor... it's just a question of whether you want to be dirty and cool, or clean and hot... the best idea is to find a happy median...
how do you compenste if you are running too rich/too lean?
my car seems to be leaning right out at full throttle... (using A/F monitor whilst driving)
is this not good? i have the knock sensor which affects (retards) the timing if there is any pre-detonation, i think it is doing this alot at WOT.
is fuel pressure something to consider?
