The lost motion assembly in the vtec heads basically keeps the vtec rocker arm from waving all around when it is not engaged. It is a spring assembly under the rocker arm that keeps it pressed against the cam a little so that it is controlled and ready for the vtec pins to move through when engaged. Without it, the middle rocker arm would just lay there and not like up with the others.
