i've searched around and haven't found anything really about this problem. i have a 98 GSR, and when i take it into VTEC in 1st gear, it doesn't kick in till about 6,800rpm, when i shift into 2nd gear it kicks in at about 6,000, but it seems like it goes on and off every 500rpm after that. like it will engage at 6,000, disengage at 6,500, then engage again at 7,000, and so on. i have no CEL, haven't checked the oil yet, but theres no oil indicator light on or anything. have you ever heard of anything like this, or know what might be causing it?

that indicator light won't come on till it's too late
