It's recommended because they don't know the condition of your stock springs and they don't want you to get valve float in the high rpm's due to faulty valve springs, then have you turn around and blame it on them. Check e-bay for some aftermarket performance springs.

The sohc zc pretty much has the same cylinder head as the d16a6. I run a Gude Gorilla cam--which is probably the second most wicked shelf cam available for this motor, its power band is about from 5800-8500 rpm--and with new stock springs and retainers--routinely shift at 8500-8600 rpm...the only aftermarket valve springs I have found for a d16a6 are the Iskys. Sohc can get away with using a stock spring, because the valves are so small and light. Sohc-vtecs can apparently withstand 9000-9200 using stock valves, springs, and retainers--the key is having NEW factory springs--valvesprings lose their tension after a while. Still, for extra insurance it can't hurt to get some Isky springs--as I am eventually going to get. You don't want or need the ti. retainers on an sohc though...

Once (by accident of course) I have spun this motor (for like 2-3 seconds) to 9800-10,000 rpm...gods honest truth, with no harm done!! I would NEVER intentinally do something like that though...

I once had a D15B8, ported PM6 head with bullfrog cam, 98 EX transmission, and a chipped P75, I ran 10krpm for about three days no problem.... I later found four exhaust vavle stems poking out of my catalytic converter while the valve faces were upside down and planted in the head. I'm sure there are hundreds of others out there who had fun blowing their stock motors during the days before their swaps.
