Default tranny woes

I have here a 97 ITR who won't go into gear when the car is on. When you try to put it into gear, all you hear is a nice grinding sound . However when the car is off, the car will go into gear. Can any one please tell me what the problem is? Any ideas? Thanks

More ideas...

One of the axle may not be all the way in the tranny. Or, you could have a broken axle. Or, you could have a broken differential.

Clutch is not releasing. Keeps load on the gears. Synchro trans does not like shifting under load. When stationary, if the clutch does not release properly, the input shaft is turning, but since the car is not moving, the output shaft cannot turn. It could be the master or slave cylinder or the fluid could be old and full of crud. A good chance is a spring or loose piece of crud got into the diaphragm spring of the pressure plate and will not let it release properly. Basically it means new clutch time.

As far as improperly installed axle or bad diff, they would make noise all the time, not just when trying to shift and certainly not when the car is stationary and trying to engage a gear.

Reading is fundamental. Or so a commercial used to tell me during Sat morning cartoons. I think that's what irony is.
