Default Top end? or Bottom end? Which is first? What is the most bang for the buck?

My setup are as follows:
JDM B16a1 in a EFCivic Sedan.

Which options is better? Which is more bang for the buck? What are the advantages or disadvantages? Which would make the most power?

Option1
P&P head (Portflow or Ericks Racing), ITR-Cams w/ Camgears, Int. Mani w/ GSR JG Bored T/B, Valve springs, fpr,

Option2
B18a bottom end with- USDM ITR pistons .25 over, new bearings, new hone, balanced, knife edge crank, LS VTEC setup.

Thanks for your input

head will give u way more HP...get what u said and portflow is fine for the p&p...but if u wanted more torque do ur lsvtec u want...head is for high hp...and some torque...when goin larger displacement....u get more torque....but i really like building the head better...and later on doing the block....

I would do the top end first deffinetly. I have seen cars with stock bottom ends run very good with just the headwork and cams.

I agree. Serious headwork could make very significant gains and can also have a reasonable bang for the buck factor. The ports, guides and valves are probably the most restrictive part of the entire setup and opening these up a bit can make great power. Be sure to get a nice valve job too. If you're gonna do the bottom end, I think knife edge crank is unneeded unless you are slapping on a big turbo or running 300+ hp. Honda manufactures very nice cranks from the factory, hell you might not even need to balance it, but it's definately not a bad idea.

get the head job... Itll give you more power, your bottom should be fine for now.

Hmm, I am going to go against the flow here and say build up the bottom end. With you talking about boring it, and raising the compression, I honestly think that power output would be the same, if not higher.

Plus the fact that the strength of the bottom end will be greatly increased. The bottom end is where you will have your most failure.

Thanks for all the great replies. I was partial to building the bottom end because the B16a lacks sufficient torque. I keep also hearing building the bottom like Option 2 with the stock b16a head.......could easily pull 180 to the wheels (tuned etc.)
