Default Timing question

I've heard that you cannot use the adjustable degrees feature on an adjustable timing light to figure out the timing on a CCW engine... like Honda's (at least the old ones - i.e. d16a6, d15b2, ZC, dohc zc, etc.) That you just have to set it to 0 degrees on the dial and use it like that.

Is this true? I've heard both ways now.
