I am going to put a new timing belt on my 95 GSR motor. I am new to Hondas and a couple of people have told me I need to replace the water pump and the belt tensioner everytime I replace the timing belt. They claim I could have bad consequences. Is this true. This is my daily driver. I don't plan on doing any major Mods, it just takes me to and from work. Any info will be helpful, thanks!

You should replace the tensioner spring. If you aren't having problems with it, your current water pump should be fine. You can check the pump's shaft wear by trying to wiggle the pump gear up and down with the timing belt removed. You can also check the coolant system pressure to make sure you don't need a new pump.

Complete timing belt job should be:
timing belt, water pump, cam seals, fr crank seal, belt tensioner, vc gasket, tube seals, drive belts, and coolant flush.

I always do the above minus t-belt tensioner, unless it's making noise.

Wiggling a water pump won't tell you anything. Pressurizing the cooling system won't tell you anything unless you are looking for a leak. It's not worth the extra time to get back in the timing covers by not doing something. Do it once and leave it for another 90k.

yes, replace the water pump and seals while youre in there....ive rarely seen these go through two timing belts replacements without biting the dust.

Re: Timing Belt replacment. (What else needs to be done)
I have seen hundreds if not thousands of H20 pumps make it to their 2nd t belt replacement, however. Being a 95 the car easily has miles on it. I would go with the above : Complete timing belt job should be:
timing belt, water pump, cam seals, fr crank seal, belt tensioner, vc gasket, tube seals, drive belts, and coolant flush.
THe tensioner would not be bad idea knowing there are some miles on the car. I would also perform a valve adjustment at the same time before the new valve cover gasket seals the deal. IMO

It will tell you if the shaft bearings are bad. There's no need to make up lies my friend.

there are other things that can go bad with a water pump....if the bearings are good...great...but there are other things that can go bad with it.
