Scratched Pistons?
After pulling the head off my car i noticed that on the top of one of the pistions there was a nick in it. Not deep but there was an abbrasion there. It was smooth but you could tell it wasnt supposed to be there. Is this bad for the engine and should i get new pistons or am i just a lil over nervous about it?

anyone?

Re: Scratched Pistons? (Integra91LS)
how did the piston get scratched? did somthing enter the combustion chamber? is there a scratch/nick on the cylinder head as well.
it could just be a casting mark from when the piston was made?? |
Re: Scratched Pistons? (non-VTEC)
no i had the head resurfaced so i dont know... and its more or less a smudge.. its real smooth.. not jagged.. not a casting mark.. is this damaging to engine? its very small , noticeable but small

Re: Scratched Pistons? (Integra91LS)
it's probably a casting mark........if somthing hit it then it would be jagged.
maybe you should replace all 4 pistons while you have the head off........a set of B16 pistons arent very expensive. http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif |
Re: Scratched Pistons? (non-VTEC)
I (not a mechanic) heard that replacing pistons is a bitch to do. Im doing most of the work with a friend of mine whom is a mechanic and thasts what he said.. dunno

Re: Scratched Pistons? (Integra91LS)
it can be a bitch to do but it takes just a couple more hours of work. plus a trip to the machine shop to have the old pistons pressed out and new ones pressed in........it can be worth it though?
just a thought... |
Re: Scratched Pistons? (non-VTEC)
and where can i get a decent set of pistons from?
|
Re: Scratched Pistons? (Integra91LS)
the honda dealer will sell you B16 pistons for about 40-60 bucks each. not including new rings.

Re: Scratched Pistons? (non-VTEC)
What happens to the engine if a little bit of really fine carbin gets inbetween the piston and the block itself.. in that sleeve.. will that do damage?
|
Re: Scratched Pistons? (Integra91LS)
rotate the crank so the piston moves down a bit and clean it up...........it shouldent really do anything though......
|
Re: Scratched Pistons? (non-VTEC)
if your buying new pistions and your replacing all of them it will be checper and smarter to replace them with ITR pistions you will lose a little comperssion ratio but better pistions at a cheaper price
