Default Rotary Engines

This guy I me at Wendys last night had a pretty nice RX-7, it was one of the newer ones. We talked for about an hour and he let me sit in his car. One of the things that freaked me out is that he held his car at 12,000 rpm for like 45 secs. Just blowing flames out the back and stuff. I would think that any motor that could survive that would be pretty reliable. Anyone care to elaborate on how the rx-7 engine can handle that??

yeah they can easily rev that high, but the apex seals wear out quickly imo. Especially if it is a turbo rotary the rear apex seal seem to go. I dont mean to offend any one here who has a 7, they are great cars I have owned two so far. But when the seals start to go it is time to rebuild or occasionaly pour tranny fluid in the engine to make the seals seal just so you can start you car. That **** sucks.

Blowing fire looks cool haha. But i just thought any engine that could rev that high would be pretty stable.

Actually they can't safely rev that high he's just living on borrowed time. Mazda has done research on high rpm stress in the rotary and found that as rpm increases the stress on the eccentric shaft increases exponentially. meaning much over 10,000rpm would most likely end in engine failure. I forget where I saw that report, but it was done by one of Mazda's top rotary engineers.

A rotary'll put out some scary numbers, but they're a whole other world in terms of reliability, repair, and maintenence. In order to work properly, that thing has to be calibrated/tuned quite specifically, and if he's pulling 12,000rpm every so often, he'll fry the thing. Nothing can take that much abuse.
