Right Front wheel hopping at speed and under acceleration??? Help!
Alright, so i thought that it was my tires, since i have crappy old (2yrs) Nittos that aren't balanced. Additionally, it has recently gotten cold here in NY, so i thought it was that.
I swapped it for the spare, but no luck!!! It's getting worse too. The warmer the car gets, say after 15 min of driving, the more pronounced the hobbling gets...its coming from the front right tire area, and its not the tire. It is ok when i coast, but under acceleration it gets worse. its like my wheel is going to pop off at 60 mph!!!
if you have any idea, or have had this prob, please post, and give me a clue as to what this might cost. my damn cams may have to wait a while now...
is it the bearing? cv joints?
thanks

If it was the CV joints you would hear clicking and you would know. If it was the bearings you would hear something as well.
Stand on the bumber and jump off, does the car sway, bounce right back, slowly drift back, stay down? How long have you had the dampeners (shocks) and what hieght is your car at? I of course have a feeling that it is your suspension.....wheel hop usually is.

i think that sounds like a wheel barring. a cv will not make you hop, it wll have clicking noise if it goes out.
a barring will tent to more fallow road ruts, it you spinn the tires you will feel the wheel pull to one side istead of spinning streat. also if you turn really sharp at a higher speed you feel that side start to pull out of the turn.
hope this helps.

huh, i think i need to clarify....
it does make a clicking noise, at speed, and the noise speeds up as I accelerate, as if it was linked to the tire (which led me to believe that it was the tire in the first place).
I shouldn't of said "hopping" - but rather wobbling. i have a 95 gsr with 78xxx and bilstein/H&R OE set up for about 10k now. it isn't hopping as if I was burning off from a light on shitty asphalt and the front of the car "hopping" - this is different.
Would it make sense that the wheel barring (or is it beaing?) travels at the same speed the wheel does? Is it safe? It really seems to be impeding travel. Doe it make sense that as the wheel barring gets hotter (as i drive longer) the noise and wobbling gets worse?
Sorry, i'm a little technically deficient.
Thanks

it sounds like it could be a CV Joint.. ive had a cv joint go on me and it presented major hobeling that turned into massive vibration over a couple of weeks until it eventually broke. But you shouldnt have any problems with your cv joints with a 6 year old honda.
Dude,
1. STOP DRIVING!!!
2. Get the car to a mech and replace the CV joints. How long has the clicking been going on? Look at the boots and see if they are still sealed and if so is there grease inside still? There should be. If you loose the CV joints on a drive you loose the tranny!
If it isn't the cv joint, it is something in the drive train that is going to go....soon.
I would suggest taking it to a mech and having them fix it. Acura should have a program where they do a 75 dollar eval and if you choose to fix what they find then the 75 is credit to the maint.

thanks guys, I think I'll take it to Acura. They will (should) know best.
If its a bearing, we are talking like $120
if its the cv joints/boots its like $300
if its the tranny, time to save up for the itr tranny...
is this right?
oh... brother

it sounds like it may be a ball joint or something along those lines. I don't see why a CVjoint would cause the actual wheel to wobble. In either case don't drive it except to a shop.

******UPDATE************
I took it to acura this morning, and it was wobbling as usual.
It spent 7 hrs at the dealership, with several mechanics driving it, and nothing. I got pissed, left work to take these idiots for a ride. NOTHING!!!
What is the deal? this mysterious problem seems to recur, but then it wouldn't wobble even after 20 min of mixed driving.
Does anyone have a clue?
Also, they made me pay the $75 because they said they spent time on it, and that once i do get the work done they will work that in. i could see the point that it took time, but nothing was solved. should I get my $ back? How should I comfront them?
THanks

it wasn't wabbling on the way to the dealership? Did ya hit any bumps recently and hear soemthing fly off?
Nope! as a matter of fact Spade, I drove it back from the dealership, around town (NYC) and back home. Nothing! its really annoying, because i swear when it starts wobbling, its like the wheel is going to fall off! Someone i spoke to said that I could have a flat spot in my bearing/hub, that when it gets really hot, gets exacerbated. However, that would not explain why it would behave this way yesterday morning and not night. As far as the Acura technician could see, everything was straight. However, he did not perform the "bearing test" where you jack the car up and try to move the wheel by hand. Regardless, I don't want to spend money trying to fix something I can't put my finger on...
as a side note, its a good thing that Bilstein and H&R both have lifetime warrantee's on their products, because living in NYC, my car's suspension takes a beating!

Damn, that sucks. I think that you might have had something on the wheel or driveshafts that threw everything off and then it fell off......best guess.
I know what you mean, Albuquerque has some shitty *** roads too.....that is why I am in Cali now.

is there any way your lugnuts are loose or put on improporly?
that would be the easiest and first place i would have looked.
if it is not that or any of the other things acura checked it could be something is bent. try an alignment maybe.
bad deal.

My 95 GSR recently started doing the same thing, but my wobble is on and off, in a steady pattern. It will be smooth for half a second, the vibration will start, then fade and be smooth, and start all over again. It started after i changed my clutch, but it seems dofferent everytime i take my rims off and retorque them. It might be my rim not sitting on my hub right. Ive heard something about "hubcentric rings", what are these, and do i need them?(sorry, kinda off topic)

Yeah, it didnt start doing to until i took my wheels off and rotated them. Im at a dead end here, the balace has been checked too, and its fine, any ideas???
Alright.
i did a little more homework this weekend. Figure this out.
Wheel wobbles excessively! after 30 min of highway driving.
and only wobbles when i step on the accelerator.
This means that even if i;m going 60mph or 80mph, as soon as i step on the gas, the wobbling starts. if i let off, it rolls nicely.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??? it has to be related to the axle right? it can't be the tire or the bearing, because they would cause the problem, whether i was hitting the gas or not!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Could you explain this clutch hot spot theory? I think my girlfriends geo may have that.
Here is a new idea...Maybe the radial plys on your tires are seperating. This would cause bounce and shaking intermittantly and with temp and time changes. Many time you CANNOT see this from an outside inspection of the tires. Can you borrow someone elses tires and wheels for a test? Have you taken a good look at your rear tires also? Let us know
picked up the car, with new axles now (~$500 later) and guess what? same thing!
I have a call in to the mechanic tomorrow first thing, but I'm confused. because if I do have *new* front axle assemblies, then what else could it be? I think it has to be the Bearings, but that should have been changed with the new axles. so something sounds fishy. and you bet that I'm getting to the bottom of it.
As for the tire theory, i just put new kumhos on there (to replace the Nittos) and the wobbling only occurs under acceleration.
thanks

OK, next guess...How are your motormounts? Can you shake and move the engine while it's not running? Put jack under tranny and watch from above to see if the right side of engine lifts without lifting the car also. (Be careful not to stress the tranny too much). Check all mounting bolts to see if they are tight.
It's kind of hard figuring this one out without being there. Let us know.
Earl
ps..wheel bearings are normaly not changed with the axles but a good mechanic should have caught a bad wheel bearing.
