Would the mishimoto one cause damage and maybe ruin fuel economy for a mostly stock civic? This will be used in the Phoenix area where it stays above hundred for almost all summer. Stock is to high for this area.
How is stock too high for that area?? The thermostat is gonna open at 190 regardless of the outside temperature. An open thermostat is an open thermostat regardless of outside temperatures. If your experiencing overheating problems you may want to trouble shoot this first.

if you have a 140 t-stat and the temp is 110 outside then your car is gonna reach 140 and open up and remain open as long as its over 140 internaly. So eventually the temperature in you engine will continue to rise wether you have a 140 t-stat or 190 t-stat its not gonna make your car run any cooler. That is not the purpose of the T-stat

What he said. Once the thermostat is open it doesn't matter if you have a 180 or 100. The only thing a lower temp thermostat will do is make the motor take longer to get to it's equilibrium temp. If you have a 180 now and the car is getting too hot try putting some water wetter in the coolant or running a higher percentage of water then coolant. Honda says 50/50 so maybe go with a 60/40 mixture. Also, it might be a good idea to check for air too.

^^^ a lower temp t stat should only be used if you have upgraded your cooling capacity (larger aluminum radiator) and i personally use a gates 170 with a yonaka aluminum dual core and a spoon 1.35 BAR cap. This is on a d16z6, had to use the gates lower temp t stat because the aluminum radiator was causing my stock t stat to stay closed for too long, making pressure rise in the radiator to the point of bypassing the cap and dumping into the overflow before the t stat would effectively open. Like the other guys said troubleshoot everything else first, but they are wrong about the t stat not making a difference, the pressure it builds up has to be released before the next weak point in the system (usually cap) thats the purpose of a lower temp thermostat, not to LOWER TEMP but to release pressure and allow the system to flow before its too late. This thread shows up when searching low temp thermostat on google so i decided to correct the misinformation.
