Default Question on VTEC motors for racing applications....

I was just wondering, would it be possible to inexpensively have it to where the High profile performance lobes were being used all the time - in other words a permanent fix to only run on the "VTEC" cam profile. And could you do this without the VTEC system, hardwire it or mechanically fix it somehow? Don't care at all about fuel mileage on an Auto-X prepared/mod race only vehicle...

Just trying to see if this would be an easy way to up the power versus rebuilding the B18A from my '90 GS....

You can do it on VTEC heads by using Crane or Ferrea Roller Rockers.

However, you will lose all of your bottom end.

Sure you can do it, but why?

You'll lose power on the bottom end (if it will even idle), and gain nothing.

Just get a VTEC controller or the like & drop the X-over a few hundred rpm to make it less abrupt & fill out that midrange.

True on the fact that it may not idle and you'll lose low-end power severely. If you did manage to run the high-left profile all the time, the intake valve would open too soon (overlap that exists on the high speed profile) cause some of the expanding exhaust gas to go back into the intake, which will display part of the intake air. This is what would cause a lopey idle. At high speeds, this isn't a problem because the airflow through the motor (velocity) keeps everything moving faster, but at low speed this high velocity doesn't exist.

Also, understand that there is no "VTEC" cam profile. VTEC is the system that switches between the two low end/high end cam profiles.

Yea that's exactly what the Toda VTEC killer cams do. They just have two lobes per cylinder and they lock the primary, secondary, and VTEC rockers together. This does how ever affect bottom end but who gives a if ur racing from 7,500-9,500rpm, you got all the power u'll ever need.
