Question bout Flywheel that's been buggin me
I'm posting this here even though it's really about my friend's 98 EK cuz I feel that's it's more of a general question. Here goes, can you or can you not use a light weight flywheel on a auto tranny? I see all the ppl with manual trannies using light weight flywheels but never heard it as a mod on those with auto trannies. Don't auto trannies have flywheels too? Yes, this is probably a very dumb question but I want to know. And if it's possible, how come there are no auto tranny users who pick up this mod? TIA
no, an auto tranny uses a flex plate. it is different than a fly wheel in that the torque converter bolts up to it instead of the the clutch. the clutch uses the flywheel to help create the friction needed to lock up to the trans. the torque converter uses trans fluid to lock up using centrifugal force.
the flex plate is a lot lighter than a fly wheel, so no performance gain could really be expected from finding a lighter one. he could check into a stall converter, instead of the torque converter. that would give him a higher launching rpm.
