putting a bottom end together
ok, i need a lil more understanding on completing a bottom end build. to find the correct bearing size for ur main and rods u micrometer the space where the bearings sit and then go from there to find the perfect fitting bearings? or are all premade honda bearings going to fit the motor they were made for without having to micro. the spaces? if micrometers arent the most exact tool u can use to find the right bearings u need, is there a formula that u use? thanks for the info
never put one together but from what i understand the main bearings i think are like color coded or sumtin,,,search i searched the other day on this and found that out...
i just get a standard ACL bearing kit and plastiguage it. Unless you had some crank damage or something screwed up, an ACL standard kit will put you in the correct specs. With my experience i never had a bottom end that didnt like an ACL standard bearing kit.
oem bearings are color coded and you can do and order the same if there wasnt wear. once again you can put the old bearings in, plastigauge it and if there gap is too big get the bearings that will put you in the correct specs.

If the bottom end was machined at all then you will need different bearings then the orginal color codes. In this case the machine shop should have the spec's and can order them for you or you can order yourself. I have always heard the stock bearings are the best but, this may still be up for debate. What ever you use make sure the clearance is correct. I have used plastigauge but I know some people don't truat it. Hope this helps.
thanks guys for clearing that up, i now get it alot better. i knew about the color codes but werent sure how the coincided with different aftermarket parts. how much are plastiguages and how hard are they to use? ill go with a oem crank but aftermarket rods so i guess ill need to at least check to make sure the manufacturers of the rods DID in fact use the same diameter as oem rods, thanks again!
Plastigauge is not expensive. I can't really recall but I think I paid like $20.00 for variety pack. It is very easy to use. You just place some plastigauge in the area to be measured tighten to tourqe specs. unbolt piece/s and measure how flat it was squished by the chart provided.
