Phantom Tranny Grinding?
I had an old tranny lying around in my garage so I finally installed it about a month ago to replace my old grind-happy tranny.
But this one had grinds too - going into 3rd and 4th is horrible. I've been driving like that ever since. But yesterday, I missed a shift and ground the gears hard when I was merging onto the freeway. Somehow, this horrible mis-shift made all the gear grinds go away! The whole way home, every shift was like butter. I even tested at 8,000 RPMs and it STILL wouldn'd grind going into 3rd!
But that only lasted for a day. Today, all the grinds are back in action.
So what the hell? I had automatically figured that the synchros or gearsets were worn down, but why was it shifting perfectly for a day?
Background:
-Tranny was installed with new pilot and throw-out bearings.
-At idle, the transmission/bellhousing makes a lot of noise - it sounds like there is a bad bearing somewhere in the tranny. It also makes some kind of sporadic clunking noises
-When I push in the clutch, ALL the noises go away. When I engage the clutch again, all the weird noises come back.
-Double-clutching fixes the shifting grinds.
So could there be a bad bearing or something that's come loose inside the tranny? How the hell can it shift perfectly for just one day, that's blowing my mind. I'm thinking that if something inside there is loose, it's keeping the synchros from perfectly lining up as they should be.

i would say. that the Clip on the gears set in the tranny is not locked or is broken.
I had this problem once..the main shaft gets to move around a bit..
your going to have to open up the tranny to get an idea of what is happenin anyways. I would inspect the C clip that is on the end of the tranny under the cap that you have to take off with a 1/4 inch rachet.?.. just my guess
