Help! Anyone have issues with P0172 and P219C trouble codes? ("System too rich, bank 1," and "Cylinder 1 Air-Fuel Ratio Imbalance") Any suggestions as to what is causing this and how to fix it? If you had this, what worked for you?

We have a 2019 Honda CR-V EX AWD with almost 90,000 miles.

Over the land weekend, we drove it out of town, long distance on the freeway for about four hours. The next morning when we started it in the hotel park garage, an alert light came on on the dash. The valet in the park garage grabbed a scan tool out of his own car and scanned it.

It was a P0172 "System too rich bank 1".

He cleared the code and we drove it home. On the way home the "Check Engine Light" came. At home I scanned the car with my own scan tool:

While parked, I used my scanner's "live logging" feature to log data while idling it and then revving it slightly for a few seconds.

While both idling (low RPM's) and also slightly revving it (higher RPM's) the fuel trims stayed pretty consistent: with minor deviations, short term fuel trim was at -25, and long term fuel trim at -21.9.

The most common issue for this on this particular model is leaking injector(s)

 

So the dealer ran their diagnostics and is saying it needs new injectors. $2,300. And this on a car that has 89,300 miles and I did all maintenance on time and at the dealer.

This is the second Honda CRV that we have owned that has had injection problems. First time shame on them. Second time shame on me.

Fooled me once, fooled me twice, won't fool me a third time.

 

Yeah, Honda and everyone kind of missed the mark with direct injection.

 

FWIW its not unique to Honda. As Ryan eluded to, direct injection has been a shitshow for most manufactures.

Not only do they have poor durability(mostly because of their environment), but replacing them is more involved that typical port injectors and there are a lot of "one time use" parts that have to be replaced when doing the job.

You may be able to get the job done a little cheaper at a quality independent shop, although the price line between quality independent shops and dealerships is very blurry now....

 

Yup.

Fragile difficult to access parts combined with $200/hr labor rates.

Suddenly every vehicle out of warranty is a worthless ticking time bomb.

Almost like the manufacturers planned it that way.....

 

Every year it seems to be going in that direction.
