Default Oil Cooler Placement Q.

I have a 1989 Honda Prelude. The car has been turbocharged for a couple years now. With this coming season, i'd like to attend some lapping events at my local track.

With the turbo, the temps are already high. To somewhat help the problem i was planning on installing an aftermarket oil cooler. My main problem is lack of space. The intercooler takes up the front bumper, and having two pusher fans leaves me no room between the fmic and the radiator.

My question is, will the performance of the oilcooler be hurt if i mount it behind the radiator? The area which i plan on mounting is directly behind one of the pusher fans that is constantly running when the car is on. When the fan is on i can feel a good amount of air traveling through the radiator.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm on the same boat as you, how high does you oil temp get without oil cooler and what oil are you running???

I'm trying to imagine putting it on front right side of the bumper (behind indicator lights where air resonator used to be) and use few piping to divert air from the side of the intercooler to the oil cooler.

Looking to buy glowshift oil cooler kit as my oil temp gets up to 250*F (120*C) on boost hot day driving (air temp 34*C and above) using Royal Purple.

I am replacing my rad with one that has a transmission fluid cooler on the bottom and will be using it for oil cooling.

Placing an oil cooler behind the rad is probably not a good idea, air is heated up going through the inter-cooler and then again through the rad.

kccord has a good idea, divert air directly to a remotely mounted oil cooler. I have seen that on many race cars. 94

I don't understand... how is the hot water inside the radiator going to cool the oil better than the slightly warm air behind the radiator?

I mounted mine in my DC2 teg where the battery used to be. Only thing is, I used an air scoop from a VW and mounted it to my hood after cutting the hole. WORKS GREAT! I doubt you want to go through that much trouble.

Using the trans cooler in radiator could work. B-series have factory liquid to liquid oil coolers ( oil/ coolant) what you usually run into though is that the oil temp is higher than coolant temp and it causes coolant temps to rise. Normally oil temp should be around coolant temp + or - a few degrees.

I would think a small cooler placed to either RH or LH inside fenders would best. Have you made a kit up yet or buying one complete?

This not my photo but good example of EG style kit with filter block and long lines reaching to RH inside fender panel

Yeh either did i but keep it going anyway. I bought a mfactory kit and havent installed it yet. I have an eg hatch and eg dont have tons of room behind bumper. Im prolly gona end up putting it in LH or RH side bumper but since not much airflow actually goes into side of bumpers am going to try to run a small fan on it. I've found oil temp switches and basically you install them inline and fan will come on at a certain temp. Search for Derale products- they have lots a nice stuff. Id like to see some good pics of ppl setups.

I like that air temp switch idea. Never thought of that actually. I know some of the HKS and Greddy kits come with fancy tin work to direct better air flow. While they are expensive kits, its not too hard to make something custom like this.
