Default OBD II Scan Tool suggestions.

Hi All ,

Hope everyone had and is having a great holiday season.

Looking to buy a Scan tool for my 96 Honda civic and 2004 Navigator. I was wondering if you folks can suggest a few that you know work well and on Honda. I'm looking at an Innova 3040a FOR 79 bucks with no tax and free shipping but figured I'd ask before I purchased.

Thanks much,
MP.

I've yet to try it, but I've heard really good things about the torque pro app for android or iphone.

Basically you buy the app for a few bucks, buy a bluetooth dongle to connect to the car, and that's it.

I would think it'd be better than the one you posted

Personally, my favorite one on the cheap is using a bluetooth communicator and a $5 app on my smartphone

Torque pro is pretty neat and let you do quite a few things that a regular scan code wouldn't do, including looking up the code for you

something like this

Amazon.com: Foseal Car OBD2 OBD 2 OBDII Bluetooth Diagnostic Scan Tool Check Engine Light for Android & Windows System Torque Pro: Automotive Amazon.com: Foseal Car OBD2 OBD 2 OBDII Bluetooth Diagnostic Scan Tool Check Engine Light for Android & Windows System Torque Pro: Automotive

In fact, if all you want to do is scan codes, the Torque app is a free download

it's only when you want the expanded features that you pay the $5

but if all you want to do is a quick scan, you can also go to Autozone and use one there for free

I have the same one, worked fine and reset codes, etc.

Used it with the Torque app. $5

I have a Scangauge II also. Works good for monitoring stuff in my truck, haven't used it as a code reader though.

From what I have seen lately is a lot of people going with the ELM Bluetooth, cheap Android tablet and torque app.

I just bought the OBDLink MX off amazon. A bit pricier than some of the others but it has some neat features.

Thanks all.

Not a big phone person but I use Republic Telcom and have a Moto E , 10 BUCKS A MONTH, and I need Wifi to get to the internet if the Bluetooth app requires a connection.

As long as it captures live data and works on a 96 Honda Civic can't go wrong with the price.

I picked this one up too when they had a black friday sale for $69.99. Works on all the cars but mainly bought it so I could have data overlay on trackday videos.

Nice! I'm still on the fence about Harry's lap timer and some of the others but that's for a different thread.

As said above the $10-15 bluetooth dongles and Torque Pro work amazingly well. I've used several of the sub $200 scanners and honestly after switching to the bluetooth dongle and app I'd never go back. It does 10x more, does it better, and does it much much cheaper. If you aren't looking for a professional style scan tool, this is the way to go imo.

...And then you have the interface to use with just about any obd2 software you can find.

you may find something decent that will allow you to read codes, readiness monitors and sensor data at your local autozone or oreillys. also lookup the autel scanners, they have some small hand held scanners with more functions for a few hundred bucks.

As one of the NVTurbo showed he owns the Autel brand. Autel makes Harbor Freight's scanner lineup! I got mine for $81! That's when Harbor Freight was using those 25% off coupons. They have them all the time..

here's a link to the scanner I got.. And I'd recommend this it's worked well on my 96. And the mode 6 is important it shows the values of all monitored components and that's the mode that will tell you if a part is degrading but hasn't failed yet (check engine light time). I used this to diagnose my bad 02 sensor.

I just found this on Harbor Freights website! 25% coupon for New Years day!! perfect!! heres the link to print it up

oh and the Innova, I had tried their brand and it was a very SLOW cpu! The 96 civic data isn't that fast but the Innova was reading the live data slowly.. I returned it and then found the one at Harbor Frieght.. and no nothing slow about it, reading the live data quickly!
