Default nOOb here! Torque wrenches???? What??!?!?!?!

I know that an engine's torque is the same as it's ability to accelerate, but what's a "torque" wrench. I was thinking of painting my calipers and my manual says i should make sure to tighten the bolt that holds the caliper to its "torque specifications." I tightened it pretty well with my socket wrench but how do i know whether or not it's tightened to "torque specifications"?

Go to a hardware store and ask for one, after looking at it you will figure it out. It just messures how much pressure is applied to the bolt.

Edit: bush doesn't suck, he has big ***** give him credit. I am going to vote for him again!

For certain bolts, an exact amount of torque (or tightness if you would like to call it) must be applied and the only way to measure EXACTLY how much torque you are putting on a bolt is to use a torque wrench.

torque, is a twisting or turning force. like the force an engine creates. it is measured in foot pounds or neuton meters. but a torque wrench is a wrench that can be set to click or stop exerting force once it reches a pre set limit. so say the spec on the bolt is 50ftlb then you set the torque wrench to 50 and turn until it clicks or just stops turning, depending on the type you buy.
