Default Noisy Speedometer in 88 Prelude

There is a squealing noise coming from the speedometer. Just wondering if anyone can tell me if it is possible to lubricate it somehow or if I am going to have to replace the cable.

Thanks

I know in my civics when I've pulled the cluster there was grease in the back of the speedo where the cable goes. I'm sure it cant hurt to throw some more in there, after 15 years I wouldnt expect much to be left in there.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Thought I was going to have to spend $50 on a new speedo cable - turns out that lubing the cable and connector did the trick. In case anyone else has the same problem and is just sorta learning as they go with fixing things (like me) I will point out a couple things that the Chilton and Haynes manuals don't tell you. Hopefully, this will save someone a little bit of time on the trial and error end of things.

First, Chilton and the service manual both say that once you have gotten to the guage cluster you can just disconnect the plugs, pull out the cluster, then disconnect the speedo cable. This was not exactly accurate with my car - after trying for a while to figure out why the damn thing wouldn't pull out the way it showed in the manual I figured out that there is no physical way short of wrecking stuff to get it out without disconnecting the speedo cable *first*. I then took the bottom panel under the steering wheel off and stuck my head under there so I could reach up and unclip the cable - btw, the clip on mine was a metal one that needed three tabs to be bent up a bit with a little screwdriver before it would release (I was told also that there is another more common plastic clip that just turns a quarter turn and pulls off).

Basically, once I got the cluster out it was just a matter of lubing it and reassembling. The grease that was in there had turned into thick gunk (hence the squeaking) so I just cleaned all that out and used a graphite lube and sprayed it into where the cable plugs into the speed sensor and into the end of the cable.
