Default Is my piston rings a goner?

GSR motor consumes about 1-1.5 quart of oil in between oil change (every 3000-3500 miles) and the muffler shoots out white/blue smoke when driving hard sometimes.

What is going on? Time to replace the piston rings? Total rebuild?

Thanks.

Do a compression test, and a leakdown test. Maybe it's just a blown headgasket. Do these and then start replacing stuff.

It could even be your valve seals. But do those test first.

just do a leakdown test
its 10x better than a compression test because it will show you where the problem is.

i thought the head gasket only had to do with cooling leaks?

By the way, the motor runs 14.7 consistany in a 98 hatch on street tires 15"

So the power is there, it just take lots of oil and shoot out smoke (white/blue)

listen to the advice given. Doesnt matter what the car runs, if its blowing a lot of smoke something is wrong. Or you can just ignore it and replace it when it blows up (which is the expensive alternative).

chill out buddy! this is not my motor nor do i care much for it. and thanks for the advice.

i did a compression test for him. it reads 210psi 185psi 210psi 210psi (5 cranks)
it seems like the 2nd cylinder is weak. we drop very little oil on the 2nd cylinder
and the compression went back up to 210psi. so i guess the rings are bad on the
2nd cylinder? thanks

by the way, i have no access to a leakdown tester so i didn't do that.
but the compression test was done as i said on my previous reply.

any commets? thanks

i think its really gradual wear man. us ITR guys go through a .5-1.0 qt of oil between changes, but our motors are known to burn oil. if its not happening all the time or billowing smoke constantly i dont think its time for a full rebuild.

thanks for the reply. but this motor goes through 1.0-1.5 qt of oil AND it shoots
white/bluish smoke. i dont think your car does that does it?? thanks

You can have good compression and still have bad oil rings or oil seals. Leakdown won't show either of those problems. If no probs with overheating or loosing coolant, then it has to be oil rings or oil seals in the head causing the smoke. Also could have out of round cylinders which would require a complete rebuild. You need to measure the cylinders for taper and roundness when you pull the pistons to re-ring.

yeah, I'd still suggest a leakdown test before any assumptions.

interestingly enough, i also go through 1qt of oil per 1000 miles...however, i do not see any smoke out the back, nor do my friends...they report that occasionally, on a 2-3 shift, some might puff out, but its light... i'll try the tests mentioned above and report my findings,...

on that motor earl, were the rings bad or the cylinder walls?

Wow! So should i even bother fixing this now? Or just keep running it until it gets worse? Then fix?

do you run in vtec a lot? on my old prelude it would burn oil like it's going out of style when i ran in vtec. after a fun weekend i'd usually need to add almost a quart, but if i drove sedately, it wouldn't need any at all.

you can build your own leakdown tester for cheap... go here:

This is exactly the way it is with my car. i tend to hit vtec every time i drive the car ....i drive it hard...very hard.

b20's loose their walls quick if not tuned properly.

1 quart of oil is a lot cheaper than a rebuild. I'd keep running it until it smokes all the time.

what do you mean by this? what does tuning have to do with worn cylinder walls?

Heat and pressure do a number on the walls. They can look perfect but will actually baloon out in the center or become out of round. That's why you pay The big$$ for custom sleaves. Heat, detonation and pressure all take their tole. That's why block guards are worthless. All they do is make the top of the block run hotter.
