Default Matching Engine vin and dash vin

Should the two match?

I see that the engine vin beginning has the engine ID and some other numbers and dash vin beginning has the year/manufacture/model id and other numbers.

But the last 6 "id digits" are the actual car id and should match right? If not the motor has been replaced?

I have a '98 Civic and I couldn't manage to find a VIN on the engine itself, but there is one on the transmission next to where it mates to the engine. The VIN on the transmission matches my car's VIN.

Additionally, there is a number printed under the engine code stamped on the engine. If you go to Honda and have them run a VIN Status Inquiry for you, you can find out the original engine number.
