Default i'm an idiot please help me!!

ok when i took my ls block apart i was in a slight hurry and instead of putting all the bolts in different baggies or what not i put them all in a can. and i have no idea where to start when putting it back together, i have a can full of different sized bolts and no idea where any of them go. anyone have any ideas how to pinpoint where they go?

the short block is assembled. i now have to put the rear main seal back on. the windage tray. the oil pump, the oil pump pickup. the water pump, the timing belt cover, the goosenecks,etc... so i'm not sure where to start when looking for the bolts. and like a real ****** moron i put all the bolts from the head in the same can which i shouldnt of done becuase now i wont know if i have extra bolts that i didnt put on. i'm using a vtec head so i dont need any of the bolts from the head.

i would start out by sorting them by size and hieght then it should be pretty easy to figure out. Also i think the helms say what size, thread etc. bolts go where even sorting them out would tell u where they go cuz the smaller ones should be for the pickup and baffle cover plate next size should be the right side cover bolts and the ones that are around an inch long should be for the timing belt cover if this doesnt help let me know i will break out my service manual for u

Dude, uh, all the bolts/nuts can pretty much go in one place or they're universal.

Oil pan - 10mm bolts/nuts all the way around, gather all your 10's, find the most of one length, if there's a bunch that are the same length, use those for the oil pan.

Windage tray - 10mm bolts/nuts, same size as oil pan.

Oil pickup tube - two 10mm bolts, one nut.

Rear main cap - short 10mm bolts

Timing cover - These are 10mm that have integrated washer and a step on them.

Head bolts - If you can't figure this out, you're in a world of hurt.

Cam cap bolts - 12mm long bolts, the four ends use long 10mm's, the cap near the distributor uses the longest 10mm bolt you have.

Thermostat housing - short 10's

Water main line/thermostat side - use the longest 10mm's you have left AFTER cam caps have been installed.

Valve cover - 4 10mm nuts, the rest are bling bling 10mm acorn nuts.

Distributor - 3 12mm bolts, just get any that fit.

Upper timing cover - 10mm bolts, one is black and long, the other two are short and not black.

Flywheel - 12pt 17mm bolts

Various accessory brackets (alt/ps/etc.) - 14mm bolts, just put them in, if they're too long, replace them with another.

Halfshaft - 3 14mm bolts, these three look different from the other 14's.

VTEC Solenoid - 10's, one is long.

This is just crap off the top of my head, most nuts/bolts are interchangeable, so it doesn't really matter.

Well you shouldn't feel too bad. On my first engine I just started ripping it apart until my dad set me straight about putting them into labeled baggies.

I keep paint caps for bolts. Every part that comes off gets a paint can cap with the bolts that held the part on. When the parts are lined out each one has a paint cap with its bolts sitting next to it.

Never lost a bolt yet.
