Default Ignition timing is working in reverse. How is this possible?

I have a 91 crx dx with mpfi. I desided it was time to check my ignition timing. Dang!!! How did this happen? When I put the pointer on the timing mark, im nowhere near the red or white marks. they are closer to the firewall of the car. When I rotate my distributor counterclockwise, the car retards. what!? shouldn't it be the other way around? Because when I rotate it clockwise, it moves towards the front of the car, but nowhere near where the marks need to line up. Could I have put my distributor on wrong after the mpfi swap? I know there is the cam key that can only line up one way, but could I have rotated the shaft on the distributor causing it to behave this way? By the way if anyone asks, I did short out the service connector under the dash.

Make sure the idle is set right for the timing adjustment.
