How Much Coolant Should My Car Be Using?
I have a '04 RSX Type-S and am wondering how much coolant should be getting "used up" (evaporating) under normal conditions? I can't tell if I have a leak and I've kept an eye on the coolant level in the mornings (when the fluid is basically cold and level) and I've noticed in the past month that it's dropped "ever so slightly" meaning enough to just barely notice it. Is this normal? How much coolant usually gets used? It's been extremely hot where I'm at (100 degrees has been the norm for the past 3 weeks). Just curious.
Coolant doesn't get "used" , per se. Some variance in the burp tank level is OK, just not alot. On my car, there is about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch difference in level between cold and hot, and thats just from coolant expansion. Sounds like she's OK to me.
Make sure that it does not change drastically, if it does your overflow tank may have a leak, either for fluid or evaporating water (which does happen over time). The overflow level will vary depending on how you drove the car, if it was in town stuff where it gets hot, it should be near its topmost level, highway driving it should be pretty low.
