Default how much for compression repair?

ok so my brother has a 03 camry, and today on the way to work his temp tach kept spiking. So he took it to the shop and they said his compression was all messed up, they said they can get him a used engine or fix the problem but it would not be 100% the same.

So my question is, around how much would it cost to fix his compression, i think they are just leaks and im not sure how many cylinders are messed up, but a rough idea about the cost of getting the compression fixedd would be nice....

you don "fix" compression. he either needs new piston rings or possibly a head gasket. New piston rings installed by a shop will probably run anywhere from $500 for a good deal to $900 for an expensive job. but for just a little bit more he can have the whole engine rebuilt.
