how do i align the cams on a b18b1 head without it on the block?
on the gears point the two arrows up and then there is to lines that point towards eachother and is parallel to the top of the head and thats it without the timing belt on it might move cause of the valves pushing on the cam lobe
Alrigh, so I torque down the cam caps and want to align the cams..when I turn 1 for example the lobe engages the valve and wants to move..I'm asking how do I align the cams, I know the timing marks..is there a tool I need..I just need a simple answer
its the exh cam right i usually hold the cam aligned with either my hand or a 12mm ratchet and route the timing belt but thats me i dunno if theres a tool since i never had a hard time doing it that way it doesn't move much
Am I supposed to use a wrench on the camshaft to hold it, there's a 27mm-28mm fitting that I can stick a open end wrench on..how do I hold the cam from moving
on the ls you can use that to hold it on time i was thinking more of the vtec engine but it all the same except you dont have that nut on the vtec camshafts
either way will work but the 12mm bolt that holds the cam gear on can hold it on time also
and i would think getting a 12mm socket is easier than a 27-28mm wrench

I used a 12mm to try and align them but.. this is how far I went before the lobes cycle over the rocker arm...how do I match them up and keep them in place..snap on has a cam locker,..do I need to actually stick it on a block to fine tune the alignment..if the cams are off timing and you turn the motor valves are gonna hit...

you dont have to fine tune the timing while the head is off the block
find top dead center on your block
1.if using the crank pulley its the last mark on crank pulley or
2.if using the crank crank gear then line up the line or slot with the arrow on the oil pump housing above the gear
head
point both cam gears up and thats good enough slap it onto the block torqe it down, loosen the tensioner cause now you have to line up cam gears with the lines point at each other perfectly parrallel with head surface, now use the 12mm ratchet and hold the wondering cam in place while you route the timing belt over
how you route the belt is up to you all i have to say is make sure its tight from both gaers to sprocket on radiator side as the tension while take away all remaining slackness, i usually start with both cam gears so that i can remove the 12 ratchet once i get the belt over both gears then i move onto the crank gear then over o2 pump and loop it over tensioner thats all, b4 i tighten tensioner i turn the crank counter clockwise about three teeth worth of the cam pulley or half of the crank gear then i tighten tensioner start and run car done have a nice day

why do you need them aligned with the head off the block? you have to take out the cams to install head studs or bolts anyway. not to mention you're gonna have valves open which isn't a good idea if you're laying it down.
you can hold the cams in place when you align the hole in the cam that matches the cam caps closest to the gear.
