hondata/ecu/tuning
i've often heard people say to maximize the full potential of any mod to your car, you should tune it. cam gear/fuel pressure regulator and a the obvious, engine management. i have a pg7 ecu and i was wondering if a hondata system would work with my ecu? or would i have to convert/switch to another ecu? i was wondering how hondata works with an ecu. is it like a piggy back system that overides certain ecu commands like revlimiter and even vtec control? does hondata have to be installed on a vtec ecu only?
I don't think a PG7 is one of the supported ECU's. It sounds like it would be an OBD-0 ECU. The Hondata S100 and S200 units only work with OBD-1 ECU's.
The older Hondata Stage 2/3/4 units will work with some OBD-0 units. See Hondata's site for ECU compatibility.
Using Hondata is a lot like chipping the ECU. You can alter the ECU's base fuel and ignition timing maps. That, in itself, decategorizes it from being any sort of an AFC or piggyback type controller. However, it still retains and uses the stock ECU for certain functions. That aspect of it keeps it from being a complete standalone. It's in between the two extremes.
You can use the Hondata boxes on certain non-VTEC ECU's. Again, see Hondata's website for that info. It's easy to get the info you need from the application tables.
