Default Help Diagnosing Sound

It just started doing this out of nowhere.

('97 LS engine ... roughly about 35k on it) .... Car was cold, getting it ready for storage.

So I started up heard a whine (more like a whirl sound high pitched sound).

Sound coming either out of Alternator or inside the Timing Case Cover. I've never heard a sound like this even on a bad belt. So I thought it'll Idle down and work itslef out.

Took it out for a spin just in case. I can notice the damn sound (a bit faint but noticeable) at around 3k (RPM's) from either gear (1st - 5th).

So what do you guys think from experience it could be ??? Could it be the Atlernator Pulley or maybe the Water Pump bearing .....

I have never heard a sound like it before, It's like a "whirl-whine" only lasts for 2-3sec during those RPM's described in the above statement.

Check power steering fluid level.

Then we will go from there.

... Sorry let me add to this ..... No PS installed on car. The sound is coming froom the indicated places not towards the front either, not from tranny nor clutch, etc...

It's not the A/C nor the Pulley ... The sound is eminating from T-Cover case towards the Alternator only.

It was fairly loud (that's why I was like WTF) that morning but it went away as the car warmed up and idled to normal rpm's...

Has the water pump ever been replaced?

Connect a Voltometer to the battery and run the car. What Amperage are you reading? It should be around 14. when the car is running

Uuuuh ??? Wasn't planning on it till around 70K. Unless it's defective which is what I am trying to determine here.

I've never had to change any "Honda" water-pump until around 130k or more ... no joke !!!

What is this gonna really tell us ???

BTW, I've had the swap in the car for 2-Years now trouble free.

*** UPDATE ***

Decided to take car to work to see if problem any dif. Parked outside in the COLD.

Drove home and the "Whirl" noise is very noticeable w/o letting engine warm up.

i'd say check the belt tention
Pick one A/C or ALT ???

The alternator has same tension never removed, ran fine last winter, so ???

The A/C was just installed before summer, but wouldn't I have or show signs of problems beforehand if tension wasn't set properly ?

It will tell you if the alternator is starting to go out or not. And sorry not amperage. Voltage.

So let's recap then .....

Possible causes:

1) A bad water pump.

2) The alternator bearings are bad or going alternator.

3) Or a bad air conditioning compressor Pulley ...
