Default Head gasket leak checks? and link tuning tips?

i have a 1988 ef3 civic with 1600 ZC Dohc turbo with T25
i put a 2.5mm copper head gasket in it . but first i put i stock one in then the copper one on top to lower the comprestion and so it would seal.

now after i put it all back together it wouldnt start .
so i took it to a workshop to get it started .
they got it started and tell me that the head gasket i put in is leaking . and steaming out the exhaust.
they had a O2 sensor bolted on the back of my exhaust to measure this and say it leaks now .

BUT it was a really really cold day and the exhaust on the car is 2 1/2" and car has never been running with it on so i think the O2 sensor was going crazy beacause of it????????????

and i checked the oil to see if watewr was leaking into it and no water in the oil !!! it looks brand new . and the water in my radiator looks good too.!!!

so i ring the workshop up to ask if they are sure its leaking . and they say yes it is steaming out the exhaust .!!!!!

so i start it up and heaps of smoke is comming out !!!! but it smells like petrol unburnt as was white ... so i advanced the timming a bit and now it runs clean !!!!

so is there another way to make sure the head gasket isnt leaking . beacause the workshop says it is...........and im no mechanic .

oh and this is a untuned motor as way it is smoking etc... runnung badly just ruffly tuned at the moment.

thanks

Maybe with a little more information in a language I can even begin to comprehend I might be able to help. I'd be glad to help out if you could find the time to punctuate and use some form of grammar that a mentally handicapped person might have a chance of understanding.
