Default GSR 5th gear....questions

Right now I have a Type R tranny in my GSR. I have a 4.785 JDM Final Drive and an LSD. Now my highway cruising is awful (4k at 70mph in 5th gear). This really gets to me because I feel like im straining the engine at that rpm for that long. Also, whenever I go to tracks I always follow a bunch of guys up. Well they tend to not want to go that speed on the highway. So, I usually end up driving at speeds I really don't want to.

I've been reading up on it and have seen that some people put a GSR 5th gear in their tranny. Now first off what does that consist of doing (something I could do myself or have a garage do?). Also, what kind of price is just the GSR 5th gear? This won't affect my 1/4 mile and roadracing because I am not in 5th gear usually. I just want a smoother drive on the highway (I have to use the highway every weekend and to events...no way around it)

any advice and opinions are welcome, thanks guys.

you only need the actual gears themselves. if you want a 94 GSR 5th gear for your ITR trans, you will need:
94-01 GSR 5th counter gear
94-01 GSR 5th main gear
(one for each shaft)

the 5th gear is the top gear on the each gearset when you pull the trans cover.

this swap will drop your revs but only slightly. according to http://www.autocrossing.com/cgi-bin/gearcalc.cgi your revs will only drop about 300rpm at 70mph putting you at approx. 3880rpm.

i dont see this swap as helping your cruises to the track much. if you really just want a cruising gear then you could look at either a 94-01 LS 5th or a 92-93 LS 5th.

the 94 LS 5th drops the 70mph rpm to ~3500. (almost feels like shifting into 6th)
the 92-93 LS 5th drops the rpm to ~3650.

save yourself the headache and make sure you want to do this swap so you dont spend the money on the gears, do the labor, and then end up changing your mind and switching back. 4k rpm at 70mph isnt so bad.

sleeper4dr: thanks for the post. I guess with what your saying it makes sense to save myself the money and hassle and keep my current setup. as long as the 4k on the highway isn't straining my engine too much then its good. its just when i am cruising up by 80 and that feels as though im really pushing it. i dont hit 5th gear vtec until 100 because my vtec engagement is at 5700 so i am not worried about being in vtec.

thanks for the post

i kinda feel the same way about my setup. i've got an ITR 5th in my 93 GSR trans which puts my 70mph cruising at 39xx rpm with my lsvtec (**** poor r/s ratio! ).

excessive rpm are supposed to be bad for engines but i would think that if you are already cruising at 70mph, then there really isnt much load being placed on the engine on relatively flat ground.
it only takes a little throttle to keep a B-series 1.8 cruising at 70. so maybe the internals arent working too hard and 4K rpm isnt that bad after all??

I say leave the tranny alone!

The gearing is perfect

I regularly cruise at 90 (4500rpm) in my GSR for 30-40 miles without lifting off, i dont see it as a strain on the engine at all, over 6k rpm i would consider a strain, certainly not 4k rpm! I'd leave the set-up you have and just ease off the pedal slightly if you think its putting a strain on the motor!
