Default Engine mangement system

I want to get into engine tunning, but awhile back I called up a shop and they were against me getting a engine management system without any experience. They described it as "teaching a baby physics", But tuners had to start from somewhere and I know they didn't all go to school for it either. I have some knowledge of engine tunning and think it's worth the extra money and dyno tunning to tune it myself. I take the adage that if someone else can do it, I can do it too. So any tuners out there lay some advice because for all I know I could be wrong.

Also I know that the AEM engine managment system is an ideal ecu, but I'm intrigued by HKS F-con ECU. How come the HKS unit is not as popular?

Thanks for the input
