Default engine coughing, no clue why

I recently had a b16 installed (in 90 civic si), but I experiance a similar thing on my d16a6 too. With the b16, it happens more in 2 places: 1)when I'm cruising at 3k rpm in 4th or 5th, just giving enough gas to stay at same speed and 2) when I get on it at around 5000 rpm. Now you should know that I'm getting a code 21 (vtec solenoid), so the check engine light is on (and I have no vtec activation of course). What I experience is the engine coughs once (makes the car slightly buck due to sudden deceleration) and the check engine light goes off simultaneously and comes back on 2 secs later. What could this be? I'm replacing the fuel filter this weekend just because. Any other ideas? Thanks.

I am having a similar problem on my D16Z6. My car had trouble starting this morning. But for the past couple of days, my car would jerk from the engine dying for a fraction of a second, then coming back while cruising. The other day I opened the throttle to pass someone, and it felt like it hit the rev limiter on my msd, except it was only at 4200 rpm. I have a feeling it is the distributor, but cannot be sure yet. I made a post about it (civic si wont rev high any more) but am still awaiting responses.

I do not have a CEL though.

'tussin does cure all...but your timing sucks

seriously, thanks for the comments. It seems to be happening more often now, but maybe I'm just paranoid. I havent driven it too hard yet either, and I'm afraid to. I'm wondering if it's because the vaccuum line on my T/B was broken off. That would be cool because I have a new one on the way anyway.

if it happened with the old motor too
check fuel pressure. it could be a clogged fuel filter or a pump going bad.
