Default Engine Build...Which pistons??

Hey im about to get my d16y7 block to machined shop, I plan on using eagle rods and no everything else im going to be using except for the pistons.. i been reading about Vitara pistons, they seem ok, but any body running 300 -400 range and what pistons you running and how much? im not saying i want to run that range all the time, but be able for the pistons to handle that with everything done correctly. Anybody?

You or your machine shop are going to have to notch the bottom of each cylinder for the Eagles to clear. On the y7 you might also have to notch the actual girdle, not too sure about that one though.

Why do you want to go with Vitaras? If I remember correctly they are very cheap, yes? If they are cheap, and I think they are a floating piston--it seems like a good choice.

You pretty much threw the budget build out the door with the Eagle rods. Just get a set of CP or Wiseco pistons and build it right the first time.

Unless they melt to the cylinder walls. I see what you're saying though. I opted for Nippon pistons but I'm only aiming for 200whp.

They seem to be doing pretty good. They're supposed to be rated to 300hp with proper tuning.

Figure this though. A new set of Vitara or Nippon pistons will run in the range of $160-180 shipped and a set of new forged pistons will run you aroung $400. How much will it cost you to rebuild your block if you melt a piston? That extra $200 for forged pistons isn't looking so bad now, is it?

We havent done forged pistons and rods in a y7 block yet so I wouldnt know if there is notching needed for the block and girdle.

i'm not sure if you are a member of D-series.org but I just posted some pictures of notched blocks in one of the threads. Take a look at them for reference.

Personally, I'd wait another month to get forged pistons and have peace of mind.
