Default electrical problems. relay cutting on and off

well this is not my problem but it is a friends. he has an inline walbro fuel pump. at low rpms like at idle or when accelerating from first or second you can hear the walbro inline whine cut on and off and you can simotaneously hear the main relay clicking on and off, any ideas, its a b16 in crx converted to obd1. can the computer sense that the car is running too rich and cut of the fuel pumps?

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by 88crx91integra &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">... can the computer sense that the car is running too rich and cut of the fuel pumps?</TD></TR></TABLE>
I don't think it can do that. If the O2 sensor reads low (rich), it'll shorten the pulse width for the injectors. It won't shut off the pump. If the pump itself has some kind of overpressure protection (I doubt it), it wouldn't be able to open the main relay.

Check the circuit powering the main relay. Sounds like flaky wiring to me.

If the ECM doesn't see the tach signal from the ignition, it'll shut off the fuel pump. Check that circuit from the ignition to the ECM. If this was it I think it also would quit firing the injectors. It does this at idle? Do you continue to hear the injectors click while the fuel pump interrupts?
