Default ECU code and diagnostic troubles...

Hi All

I recently put a jdm b20b into my 99 civic (d16y8)... I am currently running a P75 as my chipped P28 is having some issues that need to be resolved... anyway...

the idle is somewhat rough and quirky, running smoothly for a bit, then hiccupping and eventually stalling (the revs drop way down, bounce back up to around 800rpm... settle for a while, then it hiccups and bogs again... sometimes stalling rather violently...)

there is no CEL but when checking for codes it gives me:

- Code 16 - Ignition - faulty injector or wiring
- Code 18 - Ignition Timing (from what I can find... doesn't seem to exist in the shop manual)
- Code 54 - CFK Sensor (crank fluctuation sensor)

after swapping injectors, checking connectors, resoldering any loose wires in my harness or conversion harness... and reading what I can on this particular problem I can't seem to find info that fits this situation....

The engine runs great and pulls strong while driving... when at a stop the engine drops down to idle for a while, idling a but rough with some intermittent sputtering, after the first 'hiccup' it will almost stall before jumping back up... it starts to idle very very low... after another 'cycle' and 'hiccup' it will stall...

I don't think its wiring... after listening to the injectors, all of the them seem to be firing regularly... the odds that two sets of injectors are bad (or have a bad injector) I would say is slim (the one set was working fine before I took them out)...

I don't know how to check if my CKF sensor is bad... and haven't had time to track another one down to test... would a bad CKF sensor cause these symptoms?

Also, most people I have talked to have never heard of Code 18... I read it on a couple of UK sites that it is for ignition timing...

All three codes seem to be related, but where to start?
Has anyone every come across this before?

Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks!

In searching, reading, and asking questions I came across a number of possible causes for the codes and the idling issues...

It seems the codes given by the ECU do not necessarily mean that there are problems with those specific parts... they point to where the problem is being detected... in this case a local mechanic friend that works at a local shop (who understands my need to tinker vs. handing my baby over to a stranger to 'fix') suggested that the symptoms point towards a possible fuel shortage (car can't properly find stoic due to fueling issues (not enough pressure, fuel filter, etc...)) or perhaps a faulty sensor, more likely in the TB...

This gives direction for what I can try next...

and for anyone who cares... I came across this page that has a great breakdown of all the different sensors and what they do....

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds...s.htm

... again if anyone has any ideas or has experienced in solving this issue i'm all ears...

thanks!

ok.. i swapped the MAP sensor, IAC, and ECT sensor ... the car does run a bit smoother and idles more 'normal' but there is still that cursed stutter... when i was checking timing it seems that timing advances during the stutter... i'm starting to run out of ideas....

no one else has ever come across this problem??

help!!

I'm sorry that I don't know what a p75 ecu is off the top off my head, but I am assuming that is a us market ecu?

as far as code 54 is concerned I believe that jdm motors do not have this sensor and it will need to be added to run properly on a us market ecu

search for crankshaft fluctuation sensor in the archives there are a few posts about, one of them will point to a write up that katman did on the ffsquad site, that will give you a very detailed description of how to "fix" this without having to add the ckf sensor

as far as the rest of the codes go, tell me what vehicle a p75 goes to and I can try to get you some trouble shooting diagrams for the codes

thanks for the help 92_civic... the P75 is from an LS i believe... i was running a chipped P28 before but the codes and symptoms are the same...

the code 54 makes sense as it is a jdm b20b... i must have spent a good 1/2 hour looking for the sensor wire not knowing that it doesn't actually have one... LOL!

I came across those articles you were referring to before in my search, but i'll look them up again and try to see if the bypass will work...

as for code 16 and 18 I am still at a loss....

thanks again for your help!!

ok... after reading over the FFS TechNet article for the CKF bypass it says it is for using a OBD2 computer in their USDM car... however, I am using a OBD1 computer... would this technique still work?

and is this what is causing the idling problems?

thanks!
